four little neighborhood girls showed up at derby practice on monday night, playing around us on push scooters and tiny bikes. they stayed in a little corner at first, then tentatively wandered over to where we were practicing, fascinated. the boldest one pushed her scooter beside us, laughing and trying to beat us to a nonexistent finish line. after a few minutes, her friends followed, and they zipped all around, giggling and retreating to their corner to catch their breath.
they lingered until the end, pedalling and pushing back and forth by the gate. "See you next week?" we asked as we headed out to the street. the girl on the bike smiled and nodded ("Yeah. Okay!") and furiously pedaled off. and so I like to think we planted the seeds of kickass feminism in yet another generation.
other things I am enjoying: Subway's addition of fresh spinach to the sandwich menu, and Jay X's coverage of the RNC.
