the bearded men of brooklyn

They were everywhere, and all of a type. Full and thick and long past the chin of the five boys we spotted wearing them. Even the DJ at the bar had one, incongruous with his hip plaid shirt and slim-cut pants and heartfelt dance moves to the hip-hop soundtrack. "That's the fourth beard I've seen tonight," I said to Suzy. "And I mean beard. Long and out of control like that." She blamed the hipster neighborhood and new trends, and I conceded but was still fascinated. "I think he was probably a skater when he was fourteen, fifteen, and really really into hip hop. And then he got older and took all the energy and focus he'd had for that, and concentrated it on growing a beard."
