Here is how it would go in the movies:
You spend months denying your attraction, stating to all who will listen that you are not impressed, that he is not the man for you, that you outright loathe him. He is very loathable after all, the way he's always getting your goat and giving you your comeuppance. When you flounce into the coffee shop with your best girl friends (including gay Ted, natch), you heave a massive sigh of frustration, every time, as you launch into the latest story about how he has, once again, completely annoyed you with one of his classic mindfucks.
Only you don't say "mindfuck," because this is the movies.
Your friends shake their heads at your stories, but they make no secret that they find his behavior endearing. It's evident he likes you, and your infuriated stance is just a smokescreen for how much you like him back. Now you shake your head at them, frustrated at their lack of understanding, and say, Okay, yes, maybe I do like him but that's not even the point. It would never work out between us because he is so clearly not the right man for me. And your friends shrug and agree and secretly think you're completely wrong.
You are wrong. And one day, when the two of you have had another silly spat and are fuming from opposite ends of the table, glaring at each other from the corner of your eyes, you realize that you are fuming with love. You spend much of the third act newly skittish around him, trying to figure out how to quash these emotions before they can betray you, until the moment when you see him walking down the street with another woman (his visiting sister or a married work colleague as it will turn out) and are so consumed with jealousy and despair and brokenheartedness that you realize that you DO love him, madly, utterly, completely, and that there's no way you can just keep going on as though you don't. And right before you leave town, convinced it's the only course of action that will prevent a broken heart or destroyed friendship, he shows up on your doorstep with your favorite takeout or movie or board game (something wholesome anyway) and your favorite song is singing through the air and he tells you he loves you and you melt into each others arms forever.
