austin interlude: too cool for school is too cool for me

posted Saturday, 19 March 2005

"I realized a little while ago," I said to Meg as we walked past punks and metalheads and hardcore thugs and pretty boys, "that it's really easy to be enthusiastic about things when you're young. The real test is whether you're still excited when you get older, or whether you buy into it all, the pretentiousness and selfconsciousness and jadedness. The pose. The trying to be cool."

"Most people do," Meg said. "And it's a shame."

Time passes and more and more I'm glad I'm no longer 16 and 17 and 18. Or 23 or 24 or 25, even. I'm glad those worries and insecurities are behind me. And while it's true new ones lie ahead, at least they will be different from the boring old ones I'm so very tired of.

Being too cool for school is no longer on the agenda. Come out and play when you cross it off yours.
