a little more for little you

I went to see the Hives tonight (the ticket had been bought before I realized my lack of cash), with the lovely and talented Rogers Sisters opening. I wasn't all about the new Hives album, but seeing Howlin' Pelle in action seemed like something you should do in your rock 'n' roll life before the end.

happily, they were the hype, all preening rock star swagger and joyous bombast. it reminded me less of a concert and more of a religious revival. and not just Howlin' Pelle either (whose previously unnoticed resemblance to an ex-boyfriend was a little jarring), but Nicholaus ArsonĀ and, particularly, drummer Chris Dangerous, who was great at whipping the crowd into a pre-encore frenzy. it was theatrical, it was fun, it was worth the exorbitant ticket price.

"We came in today on an aeroplane but they would not let us bring in our beautiful Hives banner, which you love so much! And they took our guitars, because they said they were lethal weapons! This is the country you live in!" - Howlin' Pelle Almqvist
